we did that specifically to preserve the finish (not having holds in it). Of course, this is a vintage-styled instrument, so we requested the Custom Shop to include the covers in the case. If you want them installed, that's no problem (if you'd like us to do so, at no charge, just let us know). It includes a vintage style Deluxe hardshell case, strap and Certificate of Authenticity.

This is an amazing looking, sounding and feeling Custom Shop '64 Jazz. Come to Truetone Music to check it out, or order it right here right now to get it sent straight to your home.

Serial # R146825

Part# 9231014516

Weight: 9.0 lbs

Finish Package: Closet Classic with Heavy Checking

Finish: Nitro Lacquer

Color: Olympic White with Matching Headstock

Pickguard: Tortoise Shell

Pickups: Custom Shop Vintage J-Bass Rhythm / Lead

Body: Alder - Charcoal Frost Metallic with a Tortoiseshell pickguard. For the finish package, we went with Closet Classic, with heavy checking to give it a bit more character. As the name suggests, this creates the appearance of an instrument that was made 50 - 60 years, but was then put away in its case. You'll see finish checking, some of the glossiness muted, and hardware without the shine.

Where this Jazz bass stands out is the addition of a a Custom Shop 59 - 62 P Bass pickup. It provides classic P Bass tone, known as "the sound heard around the world". It's versatile, and can be used in a variety of settings, from old school R&B to punk and everything in between. A Custom Shop Vintage Jazz bass pickup in the bridge position brings the classic Jazz bass sound. While Fender has done this on a variety of basses over the years, you rarely, if ever, see it in a traditional setup (typically they have been ultra modern basses with active electronics). We wanted to go old school, so we kept everything passive. The goal was to create a bass that could have been but never was in 1964.

To further the vintage vibe, we had the finish removed from the back of the neck. This gives you a truly broken in feel, making this bass an absolute pleasure to play. The rock solid quartersawn maple neck is topped off with a nice dark rosewood board and clay dots. We added two modern tweaks to make it a little more playable - a 9.5" radius and Medium Jumbo (6150) frets. This gives the bass a bit more of a modern feel, while still retaining the classic nature of the bass.

Another modernized feature we included is the High Mass bridge. This was developed by Fender some years ago, due to inability to get consistent supply of one of the most popular bass bridges (the Leo Quan Badass). This is a favorite of ours and we try to put it on every Custom Shop bass that we do that doesn't need to be "period correct". As the name implies, it has a higher mass content than a vintage style bridge, which helps to improve tone. It adds sustain, resonance and attack without significantly altering your tone. The brass baseplate and machined saddles impart warm, authentic vintage-style tone with .75" string spacing for a familiar playing feel.

The bass comes without the bridge and pickup covers installed. The wood grain looks great behind the clear finish, and the sparkle is the definition of eye-catching. The silver anodized pickguard ties it all together, and the Abalone inlays are the perfect finishing touch.

This Custom Shop 1960 Jazz Bass is a testament to their ability to pull off vintage recreations with modern playability. It features a period correct 60 "U" neck shape, classic vintage-voiced pickups, and a mostly otherwise traditional design. We went with a 9.5" radius and Narrow Tall (6105) frets - this is one of the most common and popular modifications to vintage-styled instruments out of the Custom Shop. So, you get a modern feel on a vintage style bass. For the pickups, we kept it real, going with the base model Custom Shop Vintage Jazz Bass pickup set. These recreate the sound of a classic mid-60's Jazz bass and are versatile enough for a variety of styles of playing. We also went with the old school stacked knob (concentric) knob set up. So it's a vintage styled bass, with a modern feel, in a totally unique finish.

Other features include a High Mass bridge, which is a favorite of ours and helps to improve tone & sustain. It's topped off with vintage tuning machines, bone nut and Silver Anodized pickguard, rarely seen on a bass.
