For this particular run, we did something rarely ever seen: tortoise shell block inlay and binding. On this particular Jazzmaster , we chose a classic: Target 3-Tone Sunburst (more on that later). We've done a lot of Custom Shop builds over the years, but this stands out as one of the more unique - this is the first Jazzmaster to exist like it.

The reason we can say that is the customization of the block inlays on the maple neck: they're tortoiseshell. It really catches your eye and matches the neck binding perfectly. The idea came to us when designing a Custom Shop bass, and we took that straight over to this guitar, thinking it would be a great feature on a '66 Jazzmaster. The result is actually better than what we imagined. Tortoiseshell blocks have never been done on a Teambuilt Jazzmaster, until now. They match the tortoiseshell pickguard nicely. This, plus the cream pickup covers, knobs and switch tips, creates an all around beautiful aesthetic.

The two-piece alder body sports the iconic offset curves, with a Closet Classic lacquer finish, giving it the look and feel of a guitar that was built back in the 60's, stayed hidden for decades, and just reappeared. Our friends at the Custom Shop picked out light pieces, and the result is a Jazzmaster at just 7.7 lbs.

Another aspect of this guitar that will catch your eye is the color: it's called "Target 3-Tone Sunburst", is one of the best looking sunburst finishes we've seen. The genesis of this particular style of sunburst stems from a Custom Shop Bass VI we were doing for a very particular customer that wanted the mid-60's style of sunburst, with vibrant yellow, orange and red, and defined separation all the way into the brown and black edges. It came out so well that we asked if we could do it on other instruments - and the Custom Shop then made it an official option. That's how this color was born.

The tinted maple neck sports a 62 Jazzmaster "C" shaped profile, which is the most popular for this model. It's not too fat to play, and not too skinny - it's the perfect amount of wood to grip. Throughout the years, most players have gravitated towards a 9.5" radius and 6105 (narrow tall) frets - so those are two tweaks that we made on this guitar. The result is a vintage vibe with modern playability.

Tied together with ultra-flexible, vintage-style Jazzmaster wiring—including the famous “lead/rhythm” circuit, complete with thumbwheel controls—the vintage styled Jazzmaster single-coil pickups sound mellow and fat; the model’s calling card.

Another main feature is that it's equipped with the RSD J-Bridge. Fender's proprietary take on a new & improved bridge for offset guitars like a Jazzmaster, it's there for better stability, with brass saddles for extra warmth. This bridge is only available on Custom Shop guitars. In addition, this one has vintage-style tuning machines, a bone nut and a round string tree. Maxmaster

Ever since the Jazzmaster was designed in the late 1950's, players have been drawn to the sound, feel and look of this legendary model. Over the years, it evolved, but for many, it's all about going back to the original vibe. And for some, the 1959 edition is "the one". Why? This Fender Custom Shop '59 Jazzmaster right here might answer that. And for those that want something truly unique, the aesthetic of this one may seal the deal.

Here at Truetone, everyone is a player, and we like to get everyone involved in the creation of Custom Shop guitars - we've started a run of "Staff Picks". This is one of the first, from our long time customer, employee and friend Max Kane. You may know him from his band All Systems Know, or seen him around L.A. on various stages. You may also recognize his work on our social media posts, as many of those sweet shots of guitars around Santa Monica come from him. We asked Max what his dream guitar would be, and the outcome was this '59 Jazzmaster in Sherwood Green with a matching headstock. It doesn't stop there - keep reading and you'll see why this one is special. First, here's what he said about it:

"Sherwood Green might very well be my favorite Fender color. You most commonly see it on Stratocasters or the occasional Jazz bass, but I really want it on a Jazzmaster. I really like matching headstocks, as inspired by both mid-60's guitars and the Japanese-made Contemporary Series from the 80's. I also wanted to make this one truly unique, so we went for the silver anodized pickguard and aluminum pickup covers to match. The cherry on top was the metal switch tip."

Max chose to do this one as a Closet Classic with a lacquer finish, so you get the vintage vibe, but without any wear. It looks great on the alder body, which is lightweight and resonant. That, combined with the super comfortable '59 C neck shape, results in a Jazzmaster that you'll want to play all night. There is a modernized tweak, as this guitar has a 9.5" radius and Narrow Tall (6105) frets. This makes it great for playing even when high on the neck and bending notes. Max requested for the finish to be worn off on the back of the neck, to give it a nice broken-in feel.

Another main feature is that it's equipped with the RSD J-Bridge. This is Fender's proprietary take on a new & improved bridge for offset guitars, it's there for better stability, with brass saddles for extra warmth. This bridge is only available on Custom Shop guitars. Due to the extremely positive reaction, we've started requesting it on nearly every Jazzmaster we do. Max knew right away he wanted this bridge on the guitar.

We stayed period correct for the rest of the hardware, going with vintage tuners, string retainer, etc. The guitar comes with a Custom Shop case, strap and Certificate of Authenticity.

The idea is to have everything you'd expect in a vintage Jazzmaster, modern playability, an improved upon bridge, vintage style pickups, and with a super cool look. Big thanks to Max for dreaming this one up, and congrats to whomever is fortunate to get it! Come to Truetone Music to experience this unique Jazzmaster today, or make it yours right warm, mellifluous voice and new tremolo system. It evolved over the years, but the 1959 Jazzmaster is known as the most influential model that helped define new musical genres. That's what we went for with this Custom Shop recreation, but with a few twists for modern players....and in a color that you've never seen on a Jazzmaster before.

This guitar was brand new here at Truetone just recently - it went to one of our favorite customers, and is now back again. He keeps all of his gear in pristine condition, and this one is no exception. It appears to been barely played at all. The guitar is in excellent, almost like new conditon, and comes with the orignal case, Certificate of Authenticity, etc. Setup to play perfectly by the techs in our shop, it's ready for it's next home.

The two-piece alder body sports the iconic offset curves designed for guitarists who usually played seated, and also wears a Journeyman Relic lacquer finish, giving it the look and feel of a guitar that’s survived over six decades of playing. Our friends at the Custom Shop picked out light pieces, and the result is a Jazzmaster at just 8.0 lbs.

As for the color, we chose something rarely seen: Texas Tea. By "rarely", we mean "never". Texas Tea is a color that Fender debuted a few years ago for the American Ultra series, and proved to be a hit. We've done a few Custom Shop builds with this finish, but just Strats and Teles - this is one of the first Jazzmasters to exist like it. The Anodized Silver pickguard and aluminum pickup covers add to the uniqueness, giving this guitar a look like nothing else out there. These are custom touches, as this is a guitar that we spec'ed out ourselves.

The tinted maple neck sports a 59 "D" shaped profile, another knob to the American Ultra Series. This neck shape is becoming more popular, and we've been doing it on a handful of guitars. It retains a classic feel, but a bit more streamlined design allows for easier, faster playing. Throughout the years, most players have gravitated towards a 9.5" radius and 6105 (narrow tall) frets - so those are the two tweaks that we made on this guitar.
