The middle pickup is reverse wound/reverse polarity for hum canceling in positions 2 and 4.

We also went with the easy playing Mid-60's Oval "C" neck shape, and a 9.5" radius and 6105 frets on the dark AAA rosewood fretboard. This gives you the feel of a vintage Strat but with modern playability and comfort.

This Custom Shop Strat sounds and plays as stunning as it looks. Come to Truetone Music to experience it today, or make it yours right here right now.

Weight: 7.5 lbs

Serial # R134887

Finish Package: Relic

Finish: Nitro Lacquer

Color: Copper Metallic with Matching Headstock

Pickguard: Anodized Gold

Neck Pickup: Custom Shop Fat 50's

Middle Pickup: Custom Shop Fat 50's (RWRP)

Bridge Pickup: Custom Shop Fat 50's

Body: Alder

Heavy Checking

Neck: Maple

Fretboard: Indian Rosewood

Neck Shape:Mid 60's Oval "C"

Frets: 21

Fretwire: 6105

Radius: 9.5"

Neck Nut Width: 1.650"

Neck Thickness at 1st Fret: .790"

Neck Thickness at 12th Fret: .930"

Neck Butt Width: 2.200"

Bone Nut

Tuners: Vintage Gold with Fender Logo

String Guide: Vintage Gold

Bridge: Vintage Gold

Neck Plate: Vintage Gold

Back Plate: Anodized Gold

Switch: 3 Way (can be changed to 5 way)

Case: Custom Shop Deluxe Brown

.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0789/2433/files/1-Img8658_57914e73-f8b2-49bf-972e-a96e07162e7a.jpg?v=1717712350
pre-owned-fender-custom-shop-masterbuilt-greg-fessler-madison-roy-nightshade-stratocaster-with-ohsc
Pre-Owned Fender Custom Shop Masterbuilt Greg Fessler Madison Roy Nightshade Stratocaster with OHSC

Nightshade Strat

Over the years, the Fender Custom Shop has created some amazing guitars that double as art pieces - and along the way, some of these artists have become legendary in the guitar community. One of these is Madison Roy. Originally from Ohio and now based in New Orleans, she has been painting her whole life and developed a unique style that is all her own. Madison started working with the Custom Shop in 2014, painting one-of-a-kind guitars that were an immediate hit. Since then, she has been a featured artist at the Custom Shop's annual NAMM Showcase event, and several of her guitars have been featured in the famous Custom Shop calendars. Her work has become highly desirable and collectible, as each is a one-off, never to be replicated.

Madison has often partnered with Master Builder Greg Fessler on these amazing instruments. One of the longest running veterans at the Custom Shop, he worked with and built guitars for legends such as Robben Ford, Hank Marvin, and Joe Bonamassa. Fessler’s remarkable abilities as a Master Builder have earned him accolades from many Fender artists and from discerning customers worldwide. His meticulous attention to detail is exemplified in every instrument he creates, each of which is a perfect example of the intense commitment it takes to earn the title of Master Builder.

This particular guitar is a result of that partnership. Greg Fessler built the guitar as a modern styled Strat, and Madison Roy painted it with a very unique style, naming it the "Nightshade" Strat. She took a different approach with this one, compared to many of the other guitars she's painted. Instead of the wild, vibrant colors typically used, this one has more of a minimalistic (in terms of color), almost modern motif. The shades of black, white and gray look amazing, and very sleek, especially with the black anodized pickguard that Fessler chose. Be sure to check out all of the photos and to zoom in to see the incredible detail applied to this paint job.

The guitar itself is amazing too - this is a piece of art that is absolutely meant to be played. It features a lightweight ash body with a thin poly finish to protect the paint job, quartersawn maple neck that has a very comfortable Modern C shape, and a dark Indian rosewood fretboard. It has a modern 9.5" radius and 6105 (Narrow Tall) frets make it easy to play and bend notes without fretting out. The Handwound Master Design pickups give you a classic Strat tone, with an even response across strings just the right amount of output to cut through the mix without sounding shrill. It's a very balanced set, and sounds amazing. The full list of specs is below.

We are fortunate enough to have sold some of the coolest Fender Custom Shop guitars out there - and sometimes we are twice as lucky, when one of these guitars comes back from the original owner and we get to sell it again. And, sometimes thrice! This is one of those occasions. The original owner was a long-time client. We got it back a few years ago and sold it to another long-time customer and friends of ours. Now it's here again as part of an estate collection. Neither of them really played this guitar - it was bought as to collect and display, so it's still in excellent condition.

The the original hardshell case, Certificate of Authenticity and other paperwork is all included.

The Nightshade Stratocaster was originally a featured piece at the 2015 NAMM show, has been well preserved for a decade and now available again. This is a highly collectible guitar, and one of very few Madison Roy painted guitars that are on the market. Come to Truetone Music to see it in person, or order here to add it to your collection now.

Serial # R80772

Part # 9211001459

Finish Package: NOS

Color: Custom "Nightshade" Design by Madison Roy

Pickguard: Black Anodized

Body: 2 Piece Ash; Sort for Lightweight Thin Poly Finish

Neck: Quartersawn Maple; Rolled Fingerboard Edges

Fretboard: Indian Rosewood; Sort for Dark

Tint: Light

Neck Shape: Modern "C"

Truss Rod: Bi-Flex

Dots: Micarta White

Frets: 22

Fretwire: 6105 Narrow Tall

Radius: 9.5"

Neck Thickness at 1st Fret: .820"

Neck Thickness at 12th Fret: .870"

Neck Nut Width: 1.650"

Neck Butt Width: 2.200"

Bone Nut

Neck Pickup: Custom Shop Master Design John Cruz

Middle Pickup: Custom Shop Hand-Wound John Cruz

Bridge Pickup: Custom Shop Hand-Wound John Cruz

Wiring: Modern

Hardware: Chrome/Nickel

Tuners: Schaller

Bridge: Custom Classic Strat with Ultra Snapin Arm

Neck plate: Vintage Style (just serial number)

Case: Custom Shop Deluxe Black

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0789/2433/products/1-DSCF7649_80885435-bb07-4e03-9e2c-61c581ea382b.jpg?v=1684235160
fender-custom-shop-1964-stratocaster-relic-faded-aged-3-tone-sunburst
Fender Custom Shop 1964 Stratocaster Relic Faded Aged 3-Tone Sunburst

An All-Time Classic

The 1960s saw some important changes to the Stratocaster, including a neck profile and rosewood fingerboard, pickguard template, pickups and logo, all culminating in a compelling new contemporary look and sound. As music evolved during this era, so did Leo Fender's finest creation. The Strat has continued to change over the years, but for many, stepping back to how it was done in the '60's is the way to go, especially in "pre-CBS" years.

The Custom Shop 1964 Stratocaster Relic is a great testament to that era. It features a two-piece select Alder body that is very lightweight for excellent comfort, with a lacquer finish. We chose to do this one as a Relic, in Faded Aged 3-Tone Sunburst, giving it the perfect vintage vibe. To make it a bit more unique, we went with a roasted Quartersawn Maple neck with 63 Strat “C” profile. Typically, you will see Custom Shop Strats with the 60's Oval "C" neck shape, which is great - but for those that want a bit more thickness, this is perfect. It's just slightly larger, without being overbearing. The 9.5”-radius dark Rosewood fingerboard with 6105 (Narrow Tall) frets allows for steady play up and down the neck without fretting out. We also had the neck given a Heavy Relic treatment, to maximize the "broken in" feel that players love. We do this on a lot of guitars and have found that not only do we love it, but so does nearly everyone that picks one up.

Hand-wound 64 Strat pickups with Alnico 5 magnets, a vintage stagger and enamel wiring provide rich ’60s tone. The middle pickup is reverse-wound, reverse polarity, to eliminate hum. We also chose the Vintage Modified # 2 wiring setup. This features a master volume, tone # 1 (neck & middle pickups), and tone # 2 (bridge) with treble bleed (for keeping mids and rolling off highs without adding bass). This guitar sounds downright amazing.

Other features include a Custom Shop vintage-style synchronized tremolo, vintage-style tuning machines, bone nut and mother of pearl dots. It includes a very cool blonde Custom Shop case, strap and certificate of authenticity.

Come to Truetone Music to check out this amazing Strat, or order here right now for it to be sent straight to your home.

Serial # CZ586710

Part # 9231012582

Weight: 7.4 lbs

Finish Package: Relic

Finish: Nitro Lacquer

Color: Faded Aged 3-Tone Sunburst

Pickguard: Parchment

Body: 2 Piece Select Alder

Note: Sort for Lightweight

Neck: Roasted Quartersawn Maple

Tint: Light

Note: Heavy Relic Back of Neck

Fretboard: Round Lam AAA Rosewood

Note: Sort for Dark Rosewood

Dots: Mother of Pearl

Neck Shape: 63 Strat Style "C"

Frets: 21

Fretwire: 6105 Narrow Tall

Radius: 9.5"

Neck Nut Width: 1.650"

Neck Thickness at 1st Fret: .810"

Neck Thickness at 12th Fret: .970"

Neck Butt Width: 2.200"

Bone Nut

Neck Pickup: Custom Shop Hand-Wound 64 Strat

Middle Pickup: Custom Shop Hand-Wound 64 Strat RWRP

Bridge Pickup: Custom Shop Hand-Wound 64 Strat

Wiring: Vintage Modified # 2

Hardware: Chrome/Nickel

Tuners: Vintage

Bridge: American Vintage

Neck plate: Limited Edition Custom Shop

Case: Custom Shop Deluxe Blonde

.

Limited Edition Roasted Relic 1960 Stratocaster with Birdseye Maple Neck

There aren't many (if any) guitars that are as classic as an early 60's era Strat. This one takes that platform to a different level with a variety of tweaks and upgrades. The look, feel and sound have been nailed by the Fender Custom Shop on this amazing 1960 Strat.

The lightweight, roasted alder body was given a perfect Relic treatment over the Aged Surf Green nitro lacquer finish, providing a true vintage vibe. Where this guitar really really stands out is the neck - it's roasted AAA birdseye maple, topped with a slab AAA rosewood fretboard. A midas coat was added to make the grain really pop out. We haven't seen a birdseye neck like this in a long time - it's truly stunning. A heavy relic treatment was given to the back of the neck, to make it feel "worn in". The 60's Oval "C" neck shape is the most popular choice out of the Custom Shop, and is period correct, but with the modern preference of a 9.5" radius and 6105 frets making it easy to play, especially when bending in the higher register.

In terms of sound and functionality, this Strat has it all. Instead of the standard 60's pickups, we went with the Hand-wound Fat 60's. They provide mellow vintage tones but with enough bite to cut through the mix with crisp articulation, and are over-wound for a hefty low-end punch. Alnico 2 magnets, Formvar magnet wire, period-correct cloth wire, and a fiber bobbin keep it accurate to what you would expect in a vintage Strat, with a warm, sweet output. The reverse-wound, reverse-polarity middle pickup eliminates hum for whisper-quiet performance.

This Strat also features a special wiring setup, called the "Postmodern Fat ‘50s Strat Hookup". This is achieved by connecting the tone pot to the output of the volume pot (middle lug) instead of the input. Many late fifties guitars of all brands were wired this way, but it can be done with any guitar. On a Strat, the switch has to also be wired a little differently to make it work. This will have two major effects on the tone:

First, the overall tone gets stronger with more transparent bloom. Second, the typical treble loss that occurs when rolling back the volume is much less, and both the volume and tone controls react more smoothly and more evenly, without the typical hot spots. As a side effect, it’s easier to clean up an overdriven amp by simply rolling back the volume on the guitar a bit. Many of the Fender Master Builders prefer this hook up.
Though any tone control set up will work, for the Postmodern Fat ‘50s Hookup, Fender added a modified Greasebucket tone control for the bridge pickup. This allows for gain and mid-range preservation when rolling off the highs. This results in a very versatile Strat.

Other features include an anodized gold pickguard, period correct vintage tuners and bridge, and a limited edition neckplate. It comes with a Custom Shop Deluxe Black case, strap, and Certificate of Authenticity.

We've done a run of these "Roasted Relic" Strats, and this is one of the best to come in yet. Come to Truetone Music to experience this amazing guitar today, or make it yours by ordering right here.

Serial # CZ586295

Part # 9231009145

Weight: 7.6 lbs

Finish Package: Relic

Finish: Nitro Lacquer

Color: Aged Surf Green

Pickguard: Anodized Gold

Neck Pickup: Handwound Fat 60's

Middle Pickup: Handwound Fat 60's (RWRP)

Bridge Pickup: Handwound Fat 60's

Body: Alder (Roasted), Sorted for Lightweight

Neck: AAA Birdseye Maple (Roasted)

Tint: Light

Neck Note: Midas coat to enhance grain

Neck Note: Heavy Relic back of neck

Neck Shape: 60 Oval "C"

Frets: 21

Fretwire: 6105

Fretboard: AAA Rosewood - Slab

Dots: Micarta White

Radius: 9.5"

Neck Nut Width: 1.650"

Neck Thickness at 1st Fret: .790"

Neck Thickness at 12th Fret: .930"

Neck Butt Width: 2.200"

Bone Nut

Tuners: Vintage

String Guide: Vintage

Bridge: Vintage Synchronized Tremolo

Neck Plate: Engraved Limited Edition

Back Plate: Anodized Gold

Switch: 5 Way

Wiring: Postmodern Fat 50's Hookup

Case: Custom Shop Black

Here at Truetone Music, we've had a lot unique, historic and unbelievable guitars. This Fender Custom Shop Masterbuilt Ron Thorn El Mocambo Stratocaster fits the bills on all levels. Only 25 were made, and this is the only one available at this time.

Built in 1948 in Toronto by restaurateur Joe Brown, the El Mocambo opened as a dream dining and dancing establishment, named after his favorite haunt, Mocambo, in California. A 22-foot sign - a giant palm tree with the neon-lit letters of “El Mocambo” - came to represent the venue. Decades later, after several changes in ownership, it was converted to rock house, and became THE place to play in Canada. Everyone from the Muddy Waters to the Ramones to U2 to Queens of the Stone Age graced the stage, and live albums by the Rolling Stones, Stevie Ray Vaughn, The Cars and Elvis Costello were recorded there. To say that the El Mocambo is a historic venue would be an understatement.

Fender Masterbuilder Ron Thorn, a Toronto native himself, came across the opportunity to obtain reclaimed wood from the El Mocambo and jumped on it. This led to an extremely limited run of guitars - there was enough wood for only 25 Stratocasters and 25 Telecasters. This limited-edition El Mocambo Stratocaster was built from 300-year-old eastern white pine timbers taken directly from the rafters and floor joints after the venue was renovated. Each board was examined with a metal detector to locate and extract nails, and the extremely tight-grained old-growth timbers are light and extremely resonant, making for amazing body wood for these guitars.

Thorn thought about adding a yellow-and-green paint scheme to the guitars, but after seeing the timbers, he thought he’d let the grain do the talking for him, aesthetically speaking.
“Once we got into the lumber and just how much character there was in it, it just seemed like a shame to cover that up,” he said. “We don’t need any color, it’s just beautiful exactly how it is.”

But he also paid homage to the vibe of the eral with hand-wound pickups from the Custom Shop’s venerable Josefina Campos, an African blackwood fretboard on quartersawn Canadian Maple neck, and gold mother-of-pearl inlays — complete with a palm tree in the fretboard. The neck plate also features the insignia of the El Mocambo. Full specs are below.

It's not just a Strat, it's a complete package - Strat, Tele, Jazzmaster and Jazz bass - all in the same color, as a matching set. For the colors, we picked unique ones that are rarely ever seen. In this case, it's one never seen, as it's never been done. Officially, it's called Silver Natural Sparkle, but we're going with the moniker of "Santa Monica Sparkle", as it was dreamt up right here, and represents the beach city well.

This one of the coolest and most finishes we've seen. It's not shown in the list of Custom Shop colors, as it's never really existed. Credit goes to Truetone vet Louis Castillo, who made the suggestion for a "natural sparkle" while we were dreaming up unique guitars to do. At first, it elicited a laugh - and then we realized the potential. We worked directly with the Fender Custom Shop's paint expert, Jay Nelson, who ran several prototypes until we settled on the final version. It started as a single guitar - but once we saw it, we knew it had to be done as a full set. This is the first Stratocaster to arrive, and it's even better than we thought it would be.

We'll pause now to allow time for viewing of the photos - For the maple neck, we decided not to stay period correct with a '57 "V" profile - on this guitar, we chose something that may be more accessible to more players. We went for the '59 Esquire "C" neck profile, to give it a vintage feel, but with a "C" shape that is a touch more familiar. The fingerboard has been updated to 9.5”-radius, with 6105 (Narrow Tall) frets. So, it's a vintage vibe with a modern feel.

For the pickups, we chose the Custom Shop Fat 50's set, which is the most popular on Strats being spec'ed out from scratch. These recreate the sound of a classic mid-50's Strat, using formvar wire, Alnico 5 magnets and a vintage stagger, with strong output and a nice, even response across the tonal spectrum. Enhanced bass response provides power without a harsh midrange. It's a calibrated set, and very balanced. The middle pickup is reverse wound/reverse polarity for hum canceling in positions 2 and 4.

The abalone dots on the neck add a nice finishing touch. Other features include an American Vintage synchronized tremolo, vintage-style tuning machines, bone nut and a silver anodized pickguard. It has the look and feel of a guitar that came out of the factory, was never played, and aged gracefully inside of its case, perhaps only taken out to be polished, resulting in a lush, beautiful patina. We went for "sort for lightweight" to make sure it didn't come out too heavy. Our friends at the Custom Shop picked out the lightest piece of alder on hand at the time.

The main feature that stands out is the AAAA Flame Maple neck. The Custom Shop selected the most primo piece of flame maple to use on this guitar, and it's mind blowing. We've had a lot of flame maple necks here, but this one takes the cake. Normally, AAAA flame is only available on a Masterbuilt instrument, but we were able to get it for this one. The neck was roasted, which ends up really accenting the flames. Be sure to check out all of the photos to see just how nice the neck is.

It's not just about the look through - the neck is a super comfortable 10/56 "V" shape that was modified a bit. We asked for it a bit slimmer in the first position, so it's .840" at the 1st fret instead of the usual .880", and retains the .980" depth at the 12th fret. It's super comfortable to play. Another added feature is the compound radius of 9.5 - 12.0" and Narrow Tall (6105) frets. It allows for a classic feel when playing chords, but then easy bending while playing leads as it evolves into a 12.0" radius further up the neck.

Where this guitar steps into another dimension is the pickups. All three are Handwound, with the neck and middle being the Ancho Poblano Strat pickups. Bright, with plenty of chime, they are crafted around alnico 3 magnets, Formvar wire and staggered pole pieces. These pickups are overwound for high output and wax-potted to resist feedback. Also, the middle pickup is RWRP (reverse wound reverse polarity) to eliminate hum in positions 2 and 4. The bridge pickup brings the bite in the form of an El Diablo Strat pickup, overwound by hand to provide an aggressive and high output option for Strat players. You still get excellent clarity but with a dose of extra heat. This custom set allows for a wide range of high-output tones.

Additionally, the ½ blender wiring turns the second tone control into a blend pot while the pickup switch is in Position 1 and 2, allowing you to mix the neck pickup in, shaping your tone to precisely match your taste.

It doesn't end there with the customization. We chose to go with the Custom Shop RSD Strat tremolo bridge for this one. While it looks like a normal bridge, it combines vintage 6-screw aesthetics with modern playability updates. It has a narrower string/saddle spacing to keep the high and low E strings from slipping off the fretboard edges, an improved pivot design for smoother vibrato, and a secure pop-in tremolo arm where you can adjust the tension.

Other features include a single-ply parchment pickguard, vintage tuners and a Limited Edition neckplate. The guitar comes with a deluxe tweed case, strap and certificate of authenticity.

As soon as we opened the case and pull this guitar out, "oohs" and "aahs" were heard, due to the AAAA flame maple neck. Then we plugged it and we equally as blown away by the sound. You can see and hear why for yourself by coming to Truetone Music, or by ordering right here to be shipped to your home.

Serial # CZ590736

Part # 9231017280

Weight: 7.3 lbs

Finish Package: Deluxe Closet Classic

Finish: Nitro Lacquer

Color: Copper

Pickguard: Single Ply Parchment

Neck Pickup: Custom Shop Handwound Ancho Poblano

Middle Pickup: Custom Shop Handwound Ancho Poblano

Bridge Pickup: Custom Shop Handwound El Diablo

Body: Roasted Alder - Custom Josefina hand-wound pickups matched to the originals are connected to a five-way switch and vintage wiring, including a “treble bleed” tone capacitor.

Other features include a three-ply pickguard, vintage-style synchronized tremolo with Callaham bridge block, vintage-style tuning machines, bone nut, and wing string tree with metal spacer. Includes deluxe hardshell case, strap, polishing cloth, McCready case candy kit and certificate of authenticity.

What we have here is a truly special guitar, and a rare find. With only 60 ever made, and less than 55 sold to dealers across the world to fulfill consumer demand, the Custom Shop Masterbuilt Mike McCready Strat was extremely hard to get upon the original release. Considering the collectibility standpoint, and the fact that most owners will keep it for years, it's likely that many will never be available for purchase. We look forward to placing this one in its next collection.

Serial # VV200 (52692 on neckplate)

Body: 2-Piece Select Alder

Color: Faded 3-Color Sunburst

Finish: Nitrocellulose Lacquer

Neck: Flame Maple with a 1960 Oval “C” Back-Shape

Fingerboard: AAA Rosewood

Radius: 9.5"

Frets: 21, Medium Vintage

Hardware: Nickel/Chrome

Bridge: 6-Saddle Vintage-Style Synchronized Tremolo with Callaham Bridge Block

Pickups: Custom Shop Hand-Wound Mike McCready Strat® (Bridge, Middle and Neck)

Wiring: Vintage

Controls: Master Volume, Tone 1.
